Alabama River Heritage
By Peggy Collins

Celebrate aviation history when the Tuskegee Air National Historic Site hosts its grand opening on October 10-12 this year. Take a simulated plane ride and learn about the contributions the airmen made through dioramas, hands-on exhibits and more at historic Moton Field.

When you see the city-block-size Auburn Tiger paw print in the main square in Auburn or sip lemonade at Toomer's Corner, there is no doubt you're in the heart of Tiger Country.

Whether it's the Iron Bowl, featuring the Auburn Tigers and the University of Alabama Crimson Tide, or the Turkey Day Classic, featuring Alabama State University Hornets and the Tuskegee Golden Tigers, great football tops the list of sports recreation in Alabama's River Heritage region.

You may be surprised to discover there are also several golf courses, including four Robert Trent Jones courses; a world-class baseball facility; two national forests; eight state parks; three gaming facilities; several water parks; a nationally recognized zoo and wildlife preserve; and secluded spots for canoeing, camping and fishing.

Riverwalk Stadium, home of the championship Montgomery Biscuits baseball team, is within walking distance of many downtown attractions. Montgomery's 9,000-seat multi-purpose arena, the Joe L. Reed Acadome, hosts Hornets basketball and is a popular venue for high school athletic events. Historic Lagoon Park is the site of softball, tennis and other recreational activities.

Troy, noted for its many youth athletic events, is home to the Jimmy Lunsford Tennis Center. Its Sportsplex is a state-of-the art facility, as is Dothan's Westgate Complex. Now in its seventh year as the USTA's top circuit event, the Movie Gallery Pro Classic takes place at the Westgate Tennis Center each spring. While in Dothan, walk the world's smallest city block or slide down the Great White Slide at Water World.

Want to fish the day away? Jones Bluff near Selma, Pike County Lake in Troy, Lake Martin near Alexander City, and beautiful Lake Eufaula offer great adventures for anglers. Many of these sites are also perfect for canoeing and kayaking.
